Creamy Cantaloupe Smoothie Recipe With Low Histamine Substitutions

Anyone who knows me is aware of my interest in seemingly odd smoothie concoctions. When abiding by a strict low histamine and vegan diet, my combinations had to be creative. I enjoy smoothies as much as the next gal, but come on. Do dietary restrictions always have to impose on my love for tasty blends of fruits and veggies?!

That is when I found it - a delectable, nutritious smoothie that easily conforms to allergy friendly needs. I hope the following recipe for the Creamy Cantaloupe Smoothie (with substitutions) inspires any of those stuck in the dreaded low histamine rut.

Creamy Cantaloupe Smoothie Recipe:
  • 2 Frozen Bananas
  • 1/2 - 1 Small Cantaloupe Melon
  •  1 -2 Cups Spinach
  • Small Vanilla Bean Segment (to taste)
  • 1/4 Tsp OR (to taste) Cinnamon
  • Water OR Plant Based Milk of Choice

Combine all ingredients in a blender. Add water or plant based milk of choice to achieve  desired consistency. Blend. The amount of fluid can be increased for ease of blending if not using a high speed blender.

Low Histamine Substitutions:

  • Bananas are not high in histamine. They are histamine liberators though. IF bananas are a no go, this recipe is NOT for you, unfortunately.
  • Rather than spinach, swiss chard or baby kale are options with a lower histamine content.
  • Syrup: Try pure maple or brown rice syrup in place a vanilla.
  • Instead of cinnamon, experiment with nutmeg if tolerated. OR add caraway seeds to replace cinnamon's sweet flavor and receive the added benefit of natural antihistamine properties.
  • Water will suffice for this recipe. To add extra nutritional content, feel free to use soy, hemp, or rice milk. Almond, cashew, and coconut work too; although, the recipe will no longer be nut free.

Did you like the recipe or is it an acquired taste?
